Item Details
Description
Passenger letters and hand drawn maps from sailing vessel, "Sarah and Eliza", 1849. The lot includes 3 Letters and 2 hand drawn maps written by passenger Chas. H. Vail to his father, Mr. S. R. Vail, Chester, Orange County NY in 1849 during his voyage from NY to San Francisco that left NY on February 14 1849 - no arrival date was found - 2 if the 3 letters are dated April and June of 1849. The captain of the ship is Thomas L. Bass (appears Boss as written in script, but NY Herald newspaper of that period list him as Capt . Bass - see below). The maps show the voyage with stops along the way in South America and the gales they endured. The letters offer a brief history of the the trip. The following information from the sfgenealogy.org - California Bound web site: "New York Herald New York City, New York February 15, 1849 / Annexed is a list of passengers by the ship Sarah and Eliza , Capt. Bass, sailed 14th inst., for San Francisco." and lists Charles Vail as a passenger. Very little information can be found on this ship, though we do know that it perished at sea in 1851, per info from the following law brief: From Circuit Court, E.D. Pennsylvania regarding a case entitled JONES v. INSURANCE CO. from 1852 discussing the seaworthyness of ships lost at sea vs. insurance coverage - in this case, The ship, Sarah & Eliza, the one described in the letters, was apparantely lost at sea while sailing from South America to New York in 1851 and insurance company claims that the ship was not seaworthy when it left port. The letters, maps and 1 envelope, are all in very good condition. One of the letters is interpreted and typed to make it easy to read, the other 2 are difficult to read as the author wrote both horizontally and vertically on the same pages.
