Description
James Wilson, PA Declaration & Constitution Signer, DS

A 1p legal document signed by James Wilson (1742-1798), one of the handful of double signers of the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution, as "James Wilson" at upper right. N.d., n.p., but probably from Pennsylvania, ca. 1790s. The partly printed and partly handwritten document bears a triangular seal at bottom. Unevenly torn or chipped edges, some darkened or wrinkled. An area of loss in the upper right corner just touches the "n" of "Wilson" in Wilson's signature. Lightly toned and with scattered foxing, else very good to near fine. 8.5" x 6.875." Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA Authentication Services, certification number AF09658, dated December 4, 2018.

In full:

"Sealed and delivered
in the Presence of

[signed] James Wilson

On the __ day of __ A.D. 179 __ Before me… came William Parker and being duly sworn -- according to law did declare and say, That he was personally present, and did see the above named James Wilson Esquire -- seal, and, as his act and deed, deliver the above deed poll, or instrument of writing; and that the name of this deponant [sic] -- thereunto subscribed, as a witness, is of his own proper hand writing, and that did also see Ellis Marshall -- subscribe his name as a witness of such sealing and delivery, and further faith not.

Sworn the day and year above written,
before me. Witness my hand and seal."

James Wilson immigrated from Scotland to the American colonies in 1766, whereupon he opened a successful private law practice in central Pennsylvania. Wilson was one of nine Pennsylvania delegates to sign the Declaration of Independence. Later, Wilson fleshed out some of most fundamental ideas of the U.S. Constitution, a document which he also signed. Wilson was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by President George Washington.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
