Description
James Wilson, PA Declaration & Constitution Signer, Signed Legal Summons

A 1p legal document signed by James Wilson (1742-1798), one of the handful of double signers of the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution, as "Wilson" at bottom verso. Issued from Carlisle, Pennsylvania on October 23, [1773] ("the thirteenth Year of our Reign.") The partly printed and partly handwritten document is also signed by Cumberland County clerk John Agnew as "John Agnew" in the lower right corner, as well as signed by the county sheriff verso. Itemized bill and docket information found verso. Evenly toned with chipped and darkened edges. Expected folds, some splitting, else very good to near fine. 7.75" x 6.625." Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services, certification number A03162, dated January 23, 2017.

In part:

"To the Sheriff of Cumberland County, Greeting:

We command you, that you take John Essary and John Galley both late of your County yeoman if they be found in your Baliwick [sic], and them safely keep, so that you may have Body before our Justices at Carlisle, at our County Court of Common Pleas, there to be held the Eighteenth Day of January next, to satisfy Elijah Wickersham as well of a certain Sum of Six pounds three Shillings…"

The docket notes verso suggest that the two delinquent defendants paid the sum owed the plaintiff, as well as attorney fees, in the January 1774 court term.

James Wilson immigrated from Scotland to the American colonies in 1766, whereupon he opened a successful private law practice in central Pennsylvania. Wilson was one of nine Pennsylvania delegates to sign the Declaration of Independence. Later, Wilson fleshed out some of most fundamental ideas of the U.S. Constitution, a document which he also signed. Wilson was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by President George Washington.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
