Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Middle Cauca region, Narino, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A wonderful pair of pottery vessels of substantially different forms and sizes. The first is of sizeable form with an ovoid body, a round shoulder, a narrow neck, and a flared rim, all supported by a rounded base. Beautiful bands of red and cream pigments on an orange ground wrap horizontally around the body. An intriguing, openwork handle comprised of 4 strips of clay connects the rim and shoulder. Alternatively, the second vessel is of a petite size and exhibits an anthropomorphic form with a flat base and outward sloping walls that rise to a carinated shoulder, narrow neck, and inward-curved rim. The neck of the vessel is decorated with features of a human face including an open mouth, a projecting nose, and slender eyes, while the jar's body is embellished with abstract designs of negative resist latticework and parallel striations on a burnt sienna ground. Please note that Lucite stand is for photography purposes only. Size of largest: 6.75" in diameter x 12.25" H (17.1 cm x 31.1 cm)

Provenance: private Ventura, California, USA collection, acquired through descent; ex-private Ventura, California, USA collection, acquired at auction and from private collections from 1965 to 1970
