GIBBS, William W. (American, 1821–1902). Untitled. Romeo, Michigan, ca. 1867–1902. Oil on board depicting a ram from the farm of the artist’s sister–in–law located in Dryden, Michigan. Framed and matted in archival material, overall 14 x 14”. Gibbs first moved to Kalamazoo in 1848 and there becoming known for his artistic talents of portraits and landscapes, most notably his painting “Father Marquette at St. Ignace in 1670” which was adopted by the U.S. Government for a postage stamp and later by the Michigan State Pioneer Society as the frontispiece to its 1903 volume.
