Description
Smith, Horace Wemyss (comp); Nuts for Future Historians to Crack : Containing the Cadwalader Pamphlet, Valley Forge Letters, etc.; Philadelphia: Horace W Smith 1856. 90 pages. Hardcover
American Revolution George Washington Joseph Reed American History - 18th Century American Politics - 18th Century Intrigue Miliitary History US Revolutionary War
Very Good-. Rear cover stain, random foxing, owner's signature on front paste-down, later owner's emboss on title page, otherwias light wear. Solid hardcover.
Intrigue in the Continental Army following the fall of New York City, concerning the actions of Washington's aide-de-camp General Joseph Reed in scheming to possibly replace Washington, perhaps with General Charles Lee. Smith wrote this small volume after the reputation of his great grandfather, University of Pennsylvania provost Rev William Smith, was besmirched in William B Reed's life of his grandfather, General Joseph Reed. Smith includes reprints of General John Cadwalader's A Reply to Genl Joseph Reed's Remarks on a late publication in the Independent Gazetteer (1783), and The Valley Forge Letters as published in the Evening Journal (1842), both works being highly condemnatory of General Reed. A fascinating footnote in the shifting loyalties during the ebb and flow of success of the American Revolution.
