Description
**First Time At Auction**

Native American, Eastern United States, Eastern Woodland, Archaic Period, ca. 5000 to 1000 BCE. A stone axe or hammer head with a groove running three-quarters of the circumference of the tool. The groove facilitated hafting the stone onto a wood handle. Such hefty examples were capable of felling trees or shaping a dugout canoe. Tools changed as the needs of the ancient Americans evolved into ever more complex situations, and this type of ground stone object was an indication of a more sedentary lifestyle involving heavy duty woodworking implements. Created by pecking, grinding, and polishing, this type of object held-up to more rigorous and prolonged use than chert or flint examples. Size: 6.125" L x 2" W (15.6 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
