Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. mid-20th century CE. A beautiful ceremonial sword called a kris (also keris) with a carved wooden handle exhibiting a pair of abstract anthropomorphic maskettes along the interior curve. Beneath the handle is a gilt copper spacer disc lined with protruding hemispherical bulbs. The forged-steel blade features a gently oscillating profile with a narrow hand guard as well as ribbons of lighter nickel along the spine. Above the hand guard are three flowers and an abstract foliate form presented on one shoulder, all decorated with 84% gold (equivalent ot 20K+). The wooden sheath consists of a slender blade housing beneath a finely grained guard protector, and the gilt nickel-brass sheath jacket is adorned with dense floral motifs in repousse on one side. Size (w/ sheath): 6.1" W x 20.1" H (15.5 cm x 51.1 cm); (blade): 12.875" L (32.7 cm); quality of gilding: 84% on blade (equivalent to 20K+)

Condition
Wooden blade housing is disconnected from guard protector, and sheath jacket is removable. Minor nicks to blade and blade housing. Great patina on blade and handle.
