Description

Very unique, rare and historic diving helmet made by the famed company Kirby Morgan. Known as the KMCSH-6 Clamshell helmet, this model was designed for use by the US Navy in the Sea Lab project in 1968. Kirby Morgan would only produce 12 of these helmets for the Navy along with another 8 for commercial use. This model has maintained some fame from its appearance on the cover of Life Magazine on October 4th, 1968.

With only 20 examples ever made, finding one of these is nearly impossible. This specific helmet was owned by a US Navy Seal who passed away in 2020. The shell is made of fiberglass with a hinge on the top front. The helmet features matching serial numbers on the facemask and helmet shell. Numerous signs of age, minor cracks and chips to the fiberglass and paint are evident. Inside original soft material in deteriorated condition. Inside headline is still in very good condition.

With some additional research, it would likely be possible to know if this helmet was part of the 12 sent to the US Navy for use on Sea Lab! Please refer to photos for additional details.

All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.
