Description
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 500 to 700 CE. A large buff-brown pottery conch shell decorated with an openwork design consisting of three openwork roundels surrounded with an openwork geometric pattern. Some remaining ochre and white surface pigment. A nice example. Size: 9.5" L (24.1 cm).

Published and exhibited: Ceremonial Objects of Ancient Mexico, Memphis Pink Palace Museum, 1984, #58.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex private Nevada, USA collection; ex Dr. David Harner collection, Arkansas, USA, from the 1950s-1960s, Collection # PM34.
