Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. An intriguing figural vessel with a round, bulbous body, a projecting head, and arms and legs dominating one side. The head features both anthropomorphic and zoomorphic features, including a spiked crest along the top and a deeply set mouth. Below the head, incised onto the body, is another anthropomorphic face of a rectangular form that is surrounded by curved lines representing a feathered headdress. The rest of the body has an incised circular pattern that flows upward from this face and around part of the wide spout. The figure depicted here perhaps represents a shaman or god caught between the animal and human world. Size: 7" W x 6.8" H (17.8 cm x 17.3 cm)
