Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 4th to 7th century CE. A hollow-cast ceramic vessel in the form of a standing lord. The regal figure stands upon a planar base with a bulbous body, broad shoulders draped with a tasseled cover, a stylized human head, and a grand headdress which doubles as the rim. The figure is depicted holding a small olla in his right hand and in his left a dangling musical instrument typically held during processional parades. The lord's pensive visage is comprised of almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, pursed lips, and ears adorned with enormous circular earspools, all beneath a wide headdress bearing the legs and head of a jaguar. Painted with cream-hued embellishments atop a russet-hued ground, this is a fabulous example from ancient Peru! Size: 6" W x 9.875" H (15.2 cm x 25.1 cm).
