Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE; Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, Protoclassic Period, ca. 500 to 1000. A pair of terracotta figures and a bowl from ancient Mesoamerican cultures! The Michoacan figure is crouching with one arm raised to the head, legs drawn up, and chin resting on knees. The figure is detailed with applied and impressed eyes, nose, mouth, earrings, and coiffure. The position and visage give the impression of someone grieving or in anguish. The next piece is a pottery whistle in the form of a zoomorphic creature with two nubbin feet, a lengthy tail, and protruding head with a mouth hole. Note holes are placed on the underside and legs, and the whistle still emits breathy notes! Last is the wonderful redware bowl with a rounded bottom and shallow basin. On the interior are white pigments applied around the walls to create geometric patterns and anthropomorphic faces. Size bowl: 4.25" W x 1.75" H (10.8 cm x 4.4 cm); whistle: 2" L x .71" W x .875" H (5.1 cm x 1.8 cm x 2.2 cm); figure: 1.125" L x 1" W x 1.75" H (2.9 cm x 2.5 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Arkansas, USA, 1950s to 1960s
