Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A handsome ceramic jar decorated with a dense profusion of abstract zoomorphic/saurian forms outlined in black, with a creamy beige background and thin bands of purple and red. The rounded base, corseted neck, and pronounced rim are all painted an earthy red. In the Gran Cocle Pre-Columbian kingdom, geometric design elements such as these were imbued with powerful symbolism, although the cognitive intent of these has largely been forgotten or is no longer known. Some researchers believe that the brightly colored Cocle ceramics refer to the contemporary belief system, which seems to have revolved around a mythic "Rainbow Serpent" who was believed to be the original designer of these motifs. Size: 5.25" W x 4.75" H (13.3 cm x 12.1 cm)
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) and has been found to be ancient and/or of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.
Provenance: ex Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired prior to 2010; ex William Micol collection, Milford, Michigan, USA
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
