Description
18th century helmet form cream pot, Joseph & Nathaniel Richardson, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1785-90, having beaded rim, urn shaped body on beaded square base with a conforming beaded circular insert on four beaded ball feet. The tall strapped handle features a ridged upper section and single spur. The front is engraved with trailing bow knot and crossed fronds around an oval cartouche. Engraved monogram ''MP'' for Mary Pemberton. Four maker's marks, ''INR'' in rectangular cartouche inside each corner of base. 6-1/2''h. Total approximate weight 6.6 troy oz. Literature: ''Joseph Richardson and Family, Philadelphia Silversmiths,'' by Martha G. Fales, 1974, Philadelphia: Historical Society of Pennsylvania, page 169, figure 138. Note: This MP cream pot is almost certainly part of Mary Pemberton's celebrated tea service and is related to the Joseph & Nathaniel Richardson tea caddy, engraved MP, owned by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, illustrated in ''Joseph Richardson and Family, Philadelphia Silversmiths,'' figure 149, with identical engraved motifs and matching monogram. The tea caddy in the Philadelphia Museum of Art is almost certainly Mary Pemberton's, though listed in ''Joseph Richardson and Family, Philadelphia Silversmiths,'' as probably for James and Phoebe (Lewis) Morton Pemberton.
