Description
18th century American coin silver drum teapot, John David, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1785, having cast pineapple finial, slightly domed and galleried lid, and slightly tapered body. Pineapple finial featuring pointed leaves, bottom of pineapple with attached double linked chain leading to collar attachment on upper handle socket. The lid is removable with a single vent hole. The tapered and angled spout is of single seam construction and the carved wood handle has all appearances of being original. The base, rim, gallery, lid, and handle sockets beaded en suite. Body is finely engraved with festooned drapery over an oval cartouche, enclosing an elaborately sprigged script monogram ''JSS'' with a flower bowknot flourish below. Marked twice ''IDAVID'' in rectangular cartouche under base. 6-1/4''h, 10''w, 4-1/2''d. Total approximate weight 18.0 troy oz. Provenance: Ron Klinger, Philadelphia, PA, 1991. Literature: ''Catalogue of American Silver,'' by Phillip Johnston, 1994, Cleveland: The Cleveland Museum of Art, page 41, displays a virtually identical teapot by this maker.
