Item Details
Description
Large memorial (22 x 18) issued for company "E" of the 37th United States Colored Troops (USCT), a regiment primarily comprised of formerly enslaved African-American men. The memorial includes a full roster of privates, non-commissioned officers, junior officers, regimental officers, and staff. A full service history of the regiment is printed at the bottom of the memorial.

The 37th USCT was raised in early 1864 from the 3rd South Carolina Colored Infantry and served around Norfolk, VA before seeing action at Petersburg, Fort Fisher, Wilmington, and witnessing the surrender of Confederate General Joseph Johnston's army at Bennett Place. Having completed their term of service, the regiment mustered out in 1867. The 3rd South Carolina Colored Infantry is best known today for a mutiny among their enlisted men over promised pay.

These memorials were created for veterans of the company to display. Rare example.
