Botanical Paintings, water color on paper, one signed lower right other appears unsigned or signed under the matting, sight 10 1/2 X 4 1/2 in. other is 8 1/2 in. x 4 1/2 in., ex. Savageau Gallery with extensive Karl biography by gallery on verso.
Mabel Fairfax Karl was known mostly as a sculptor working in stone, bronze and wood. She was also an etcher and printmaker. Born in Oregon in 1901, by 1919, she had settled in San Diego and established a studio on Point Loma. In 1926 she studied bronze casting with Archibald Dawson at the Santa Barbara School of the Arts, and then later proceeded to expand her education at the Art Students League in NYC. She married Fred Karl in 1927, and after that was active in both the San Diego and Houston, TX areas. Although primarily a sculptor she also produced prints, and taught a sketching class at the San Diego Zoo. Her work won a number of awards at various art guilds and competitions, including a purchase prize at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston in 1934. She also exhibited one of her wood pieces at the California Pacific International Exposition in 1935. She died in California in 1990.
