Jeremiah (4 years old), along with his brother Dan Moulton (also a signature to the document), were the only members of the Moulton family to narrowly survive the Indian battle of York (was destroyed by the Indians). Their parents, Joseph Moulton and his wife, and a number of family guests were killed. As a young man, Colonel Moulton served in the militia, advancing from sergeant to captain, and gaining a reputation as an energetic, capable, and popular leader of colonial scouting expeditions during Lovewell's or Dummer's War (1722-1725). He was in the first expedition at the capture of Norridgewock and one of four captains to lead the second expedition that resulted in the capture of Norridgewock on Aug. 12, 1724. This victory was celebrated as one of the most important since the death of King Philip. Thereafter, Moulton was made colonel of the third Massachusetts regiment and was third in command of the expedition led by General Pepperell against Louisburg, which capitulated to the colonial forces June 17, 1745. While serving in the militia during the Lovewell's or Dummer's War, Moulton played a prominent role in the capture the controversial Father Sbastien Rale*, French missionary to the Norridgewock Indians of the Kennebec River.
