Impressive 1847 Mexican-American War Manuscript Letter Boldly Signed "Z. Taylor, Major Genl. U.S.A. Comd."
ZACHARY TAYLOR (1784-1850). 12th President of the United States, serving from March 1849 until his death in July 1850. Before his presidency, Taylor was a Major General who's status as a national hero as "Old Rough and Ready" was a result of his Seminole War victories, later in the Mexican-American War, which won him election to the White House.
April 11, 1847-Dated Mexican-American War Period, Historic Content Manuscript Letter Signed, "Z. Taylor, Major Genl. U.S.A. Comd.", measuring 8" x 9.75", 1 page, Head Quarters Army of Occupation, Camp near Monterey, Choice Extremely Fine. A gorgeous quality, beautifully handwritten secretarial letter to the "Adjutant General of the Army, Washington D.C." being dated just two months after "Old Rough and Ready" defeated Mexican General Santa Anna at the Battle of Buena Vista. Here, Major General Zachary Taylor hears that the Mexican General Santa Anna has strangely been proclaimed "Dictator" by his army. Reading, in part:
"It is reported that General Santa Anna has been proclaimed Dictator by a part of the Army, and that our troops have advanced as far as the Puente Nacional and are in Ialupa. I do not deem it worth while to repeat the many rumors which reach us."
Faint transmital folds, written on bright and clean period wove paper. An excellent Mexican War-date letter with a magnificent vivid deep brown signature "Z. Taylor, Major Genl. U.S.A. Comd." measuring about 3" long as shown.
It is interesting to note that at the present time, Taylor and President Polk were at odds with one another for the former's perceived leniency toward the Mexicans after the Battle of Resaca de la Palma. However, Taylor's victory at Buena Vista bought him national acclaim and a groundswell of popular support back home, which would vault him into the Presidency just one year later. "Puente Nacional" may refer to: Puente Nacional, Santander, municipality of Colombia; Puente Nacional, Veracruz, municipality of Mexico.
