Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Casas Grandes, Ramos style, ca. 1200 CE. A rare and exemplary handmade pottery jar featuring a rounded base and a wide body that gradually narrows to resolve in a flared rim. The vessel has painted decorations characteristic of traditional Ramos pottery; Ramos, as a stylistic designation, is used when red-hued painted forms are outlined in black on a cream-colored ground. The body of this vessel exhibits the design of two abstract serpents with scroll-like plumes comprised of a number of different geometric motifs including circular, stepped, linear, spiraled, and triangular forms. An example such as this shows how the Ramos style required great skill and aesthetic vision. Size: 8.5" in diameter x 7" H (21.6 cm x 17.8 cm); 7.625" H (19.4 cm) on included custom stand.

The Casas Grandes (or Chihuahua) culture has always been the best known of the prehistoric cultures of northwest Mexico. International awareness of the culture first derived from its polychrome pottery and from the massive ruins of the culture's principal center, Casas Grandes —now better known as Paquime.

This piece was exhibited from October 7, 1976 to January 16, 1977 as part of the exhibition "Sacred Circles: Two Thousand Years of North American Indian Art" held at the Hayward Gallery in London, UK and was published as part of the exhibition catalogue by Ralph T.
