GLASS INTAGLIO, AFTER PRINCE STANISLAS PONI 19TH CENTURY the brownish-orange glass with the impression of an intaglio depicting Hercules carrying away Passalus and Achemon, who had mocked him, with the signature ‘Admon’ in Greek, measuring 31 x 26mm, gross weight 12.9 grams. Provenance: reproduced from an early 19th century sardonyx intaglio in the collection of Prince Stanislas Poniatowski, sold at Christie’s in 1839, lot 773, purchased by John Tyrell. The current whereabouts of the original are unknown, but Tyrell’s plaster impression of it is recorded in the Beazley archive at the University of Oxford, reference T459.
