Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
Western Europe, probably Italy or France, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. An attractive ensemble of 2 stone cameos and 2 glass intaglios. Ovoid in form, the first cameo features the front-facing head of a female, quite leonine in appearance, her head engulfed in a mane-like coiffure, almost reminiscent of a gorgoneion. The rectangular cameo also displays the head of a woman, though this one is facing left with her hair elegantly pulled back and crowned by a headband. Alternatively, the intaglios are square and circular in form. The square piece presents the left-facing head of Diana (Greek Artemis), the Roman virgin goddess of the hunt, crowned by her characteristic crescent moon and contained in a central tondo with a phytomorphic border. Last, the circular intaglio shows the left-facing head of Minerva (Greek Athena), Roman goddess of wisdom, justice, and law, wearing a visored helmet. Size of largest (ovoid cameo): 0.75" L x 0.6" W (1.9 cm x 1.5 cm)
Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
