Description
**Originally Listed At $600**
Western Europe, probably France or Italy, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A fabulous ensemble of 4 stone intaglios and 1 stone cameo, each featuring a Classical bust. Four translucent red intaglios are sculpted from carnelian and display the heads of right-facing males: one bearded, one in a Corinthian helmet perhaps intended to represent the Roman god Mars (Greek Ares), the third beardless with shoulder-length hair, and the last of a bearded and helmeted soldier between an olive branch and a sword. Alternatively, the cameo is carved from black and white agate and presents the head of a female facing left wearing a tiara with her wavy hair pulled back in a low bun. Though all are ovoid in shape, the soldier with the olive branch and sword presents a convex form. All can be easily fit into earrings or a pendant for a wearable piece of history! Size of largest (bearded male without helmet): 0.9" L x 0.7" W (2.3 cm x 1.8 cm)
Western Europe, probably France or Italy, Neoclassical period,
Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
