Description
Northern Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A pale lavender, large glass intaglio depicting a woman on a chariot driven by four horses. This may be a reference to Boudicca, Queen of the Britons, a popular figure in the Neoclassical conception of Roman Britain. This intaglio is wrapped in a hard, thin, black leather strip. The Neoclassical period saw immense northern European interest in the Classical world, in part inspired by the budding science of archaeology. Artists looked to the deep past for inspiration, but brought an imaginative sensibility to their depictions of it. Size: 2.1" W x 1.25" H (5.3 cm x 3.2 cm)
