Description
Western Europe, Neoclassical Period, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous glass cameo of ovoid form, skillfully hand-carved to depict the bust of the Roman god Mercury - Greek Hermes - and set into a gold ring with a quadfurcated band to be wearable. Sculpted from espresso-hued glass on a caramel-colored ground, the god of war is shown in profile and facing right, presenting large eyes, a straight nose, plump lips, and a protruding chin, all capped by luscious locks that flow out from his traditional winged helmet. His strong chest is adorned by intricately sculpted Roman armor. Size (ring): 0.9" Diameter (2.3 cm); (intaglio): 0.6" W x 0.8" H (1.5 cm x 2 cm); gold quality: 57.6% (equivalent to 13K+); weight: 6.2 grams; US ring size: 6.5
