Description
Cane, Likely carved from wood taken near the tomb of Jefferson as was the custom of Thomas Jefferson Craddock. In relief around the cane is "Thos. Jefferson of VA, Born Apr. 13, 1743, Was President U.S. 1801-1809, Wrote Declaration of Independence, Founder of University VA, Died July 4, 1826, This Cane Was Cut Near Jefferson. Tomb." Also decorated with fauna consisting of beaver, fox, birds and rabbits. Knop is turned of similar wood and the whole retains a fine polish. According to the book "John Bowie Strange Camp, U. C. V.(United Confederate Veterans), published the Michie Co., Charlottesville, VA. " Size: L: 32 1/2in Weight: 7oz Condition: Overall excellent missing tip Thomas Jefferson Craddock(page 101) resided near Milton, VA. He entered the Confederate army as a member of General Thomas L. Rossner's command of cavalry and was a fine soldier. He had a genius for carving and his remarkable canes were noted near and far. Also noted elsewhere: CRADDOCK, Thomas J., enlisted February 1, 1862; wounded February 20, 1863, at Hamilton's Crossing.
