Description
AMERICAN, POSSIBLY PENNSYLVANIA, NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, four and one-fourth alphabet rows segmented by horizontal bands of stitching, lower half with various pictorial motifs including birds and flower baskets, signed and dated "Catharine Grube / 1835", all encompassed by a vine border. Housed under glass in a 19th century veneer frame. Dated 1835. 15" x 16" object, 21" x 21 3/8" OA.
Good overall condition with toning and some stains, upper right corner with area of fraying on linen, thread with fading/fugitive color, signature and date with slight bleeding, frame with minor wear, a few losses to veneer and flakes in corners. Not examined out of frame.
Provenance: From the James Dunn collection, Springfield, VT.
Catalogue Note: Possibly identified as one of two Catharine Grubes living in Lancaster Co., PA around the same period this sampler was made. One Catharine Grube of Manheim was born about 1823 to parents George Grube II and Elizabeth Bet. The other Catharine was born September 25, 1827 in Lancaster Co. to parents Caspar Grube and Magdelina Geist.
