Description
AMERICAN, POSSIBLY SOUTHERN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, wool on linen, nine alphabet and numeral rows above "FWL 1836" and flower baskets, flanked by a rose vine on each side, leaves across the top and a strawberry vine across the bottom. Not framed. Once thought to be Southern, however the maker cannot be identified and there is no evidence to support an attribution. Dated 1836. 16 1/2" SQ.
Fair condition with overall toning, 1" split to fabric near top, fraying and losses to edges.
Provenance: Property deaccessioned by The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA), to benefit the collections and acquisitions funds.
