Mexico. (Western and central regions). Called Nova Hispania and Nova Galicia. c1640. By Jodicus Hondius. Published by Johannes Janssonius. Published in the famous. Mercator-Hondius atlas. Amsterdam. An important and detailed map of the Mexico, shows major cities like Mexico City (still shown with a lake around it), Acapulco, Colima, Puebla and others. Silver and gold mines shown in the center. Decorated with a stunning large armorial cartouche with a lion holding a sword and globus. On the pacific side stylized script, a sea monster and ship decorate the map. Armadillo’s can be seen in the lower cartouche. Original Hand color, copperplate engraved. Latin text on verso mentions the history of the region.
