Antique map of Western and Central Mexico, created by Jodocus Hondius around 1611. This hand-colored copperplate engraved map offers a glimpse into the historical geography of the region during this period. Published in Amsterdam as part of the renowned Mercator-Hondius Atlas, this map represents Jodocus Hondius' expansion and enhancement of Gerardus Mercator's original maps. Following Mercator's passing in 1594, Hondius acquired the map plates and incorporated his updates and additions. The result is a representation of Mexico, featuring detailed depictions of cities, Spanish settlements, Mexico City, and a notable lake surrounding the capital. The map also portrays a fictitious inland sea with islands and marks the locations of silver and copper mines with diamond-shaped symbols. Intriguingly, the map includes references to cannibals residing in remote mountains, adding an element of adventure and curiosity. Decorated with three-strap work cartouches, a Spanish treasure galleon, and a sea monster, this map showcases the artistic and decorative elements that were characteristic of the era.
