A George III Brass and Silver-Mounted Shagreen Tea Caddy
Third quarter 18th century
Sold together with a sterling silver tea scoop, probably John Stone, London, 1806.
H: 7, W: 7 1/2, D: 4 3/4 in. Weight: 0.20 oz. t. (tea scoop)
PROVENANCE:
The Estate of a Prominent Philadelphia Lady.
Condition
Rubbing and wear to shagreen surface; discoloration to shagreen around silver hardware, likely from silver polish; area of distortion and losses to shagreen on one side; some indentations from impact to surface (but not torn or with holes in surface). Splitting to wood base at underside. Interior lined with red velvet, worn down and missing in some areas; interior trim detached in some areas, with losses; dirt/debris/accretions present to interior. Scratches and some oxidation to silver hardware. Key not present. Scratches to silver spoon.
