Description
Attributed to Adriaen Hanneman (Dutch, C. 1601–1671)
Portrait of a Lady in Mourning Wearing a Pearl Necklace, Bust-Length
Oil on octagon-shaped canvas
28 7/8 x 23 3/8 in. (73.3 x 59.4cm)
Executed circa 1650.
PROVENANCE:
Private Collection, South Carolina.
NOTE:
The present work seems to be inspired by the portrait of Amalia van Solms, made by Gerald van Honthorst for the dome of the Oranjezaal in Palace Huis ten Bosch, the Hague, the Netherlands. Although Adriaen Hanneman's oeuvre still needs to be thoroughly researched, the artist is a possible candidate for the present portrait, which bears strong similarities with his Portrait of Mary I Stuart (1631-1661) with a Servant at the Mauritshuis in the Hague, especially in the hair and the pearls.
