Description
Taino. Paired snakes and birds. Cemi/stamp. The curvature of the relief carved twin snakes embrace a pair of engraved abstract bird heads. Secondary faces are incorporated into the snakes noses. The snake/bird theme suggests in part, a deistic connection to the mainland where Quetzalcoatl and the snake/bird theme originated among the Olmecs and extended into the Aztec civilization. On the reverse is a complex quadrant of interfacing triangulate swirls. The quadrant signifies the four corners of the cosmos and is a common Taino symbol. On reverse there is a small chip at lower left, near base that slightly intrudes into the design. Made of magnetite with positive field. From the Collection of Larry Roberts, author of "Taino Sculptures, Art of the Gods" and "Taino Hallucinogenic Implements, Inhaling the Cosmic Dust." Size: 5'' x 3.5'' x 2'' (13 x 9 x 5 cm).
