1930s Schrader Shallow Water Diving Helmet
Item Details
Description

One of the most interesting shallow water helmets ever designed is the Model 15 made by Morse. Unknown to many people is that Morse would sell these helmets to the A. Schraders Son company and allow them to put their ID plate on the helmet! The 1935 Schrader catalog at the very back is a full page listing for the helmet, pump, and related gear. Undoubtedly during the Great Depression, both Morse and Schrader were glad to still be in business and partner on occasion.

This unique helmet was simply called the Shallow Water Helmet by Schrader. A unique serial number was given to each, starting with the letters SWH. This helmet is SWH25. It is reasonable to assume that Schrader sold a few of these helmets based on their rarity today.

As shown in the photos, the helmet has a beautiful patina to the copper body and brass hardware. All the correct hardware is present, including the carry handle, lashing eye, window frame, lead weights, and wingnuts. The lead weights are likely older replacements and are stamped Morse Boston. Above the front lead weight, there is an old tear in the copper body. Old solder repair is evident in the area. On the left and right above the neck rings are also some smaller repairs. One of the old solder repairs has failed, and there is a small paper-thin tear in the copper. With the positioning of the lead weights and their removal and installation, repairs like this are common. Lucky with a shallow water helmet, small leaks on the lower half were not a big issue or noticeable to the diver. Two vintage repairs are also evident on the top towards the back of the helmet; please see photos. The curved glass is in excellent condition. This models bottom-heavy design makes them an easy helmet to display with no need for a unique stand.

While this helmet is nearly identical to the Morse Model 15 helmet, the presence of the Schrader tag makes it a unique model and a scarce one. For shallow water helmet collectors or someone looking for a rare special helmet, this one would make an excellent choice.

All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.

All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS. Worldwide shipping available. A shipping quote prior to the auction can be provided by emailing your postal code.
