Description

A New Gazetteer or Geographical Dictionary of North America and the West Indies, etc. Original full calf. Gilt-decorated spine with label. Illustrated with two fully hand-colored, foldout maps and many small engravings. Very detailed and with sections on Canada, Mexico, Guatemala and British America, but concentrating on the states and territories of the U.S. This edition features two attractive hand colored maps, United States and North America. The U.S. map (8 x 10.25) shows the country extending west to include a large Arkansas Territory, and a portion of Missouri Territory. An unusual configuration of Michigan extends it to the west of Lake Michigan. The map is completely intact with no tears but extensive folds. The North American map (8.5 x 11.5) shows the United States extending well into Canada in the Northwest, here named N. Caledonia. This map is also completely intact with one small tear where it is bound in to the book. Hinges tight; rubbing to some edges and small stain at top of covers, else normal cover wear. Bit of chipping at head of spine. Ffep torn partially at gutter. Some small spots of foxing but generally very good throughout text. Only three indications the book is ex-library (number on foot of spine; small stamp on title page and card pocket on inside back cover). Pub. 1833 by George McDowell & Son. 5.75 x 9. 471 pp.
