The appendixes include tables of various religions and churches, American agriculture, and colleges and schools. Map shows the country from the Atlantic Ocean to the middle of Texas and the Nebraska Territory, with an inset of the western parts of the United States entitled “Map of California, Oregon, New Mexico, Utah &c.” Map impressively detailed, showing roads, canals, and railroad lines throughout the country. Even though the inset of the western parts is on a reduced scale, it is praised by Carl Wheat for its “much up-to-date information” from Frémont, Marcy, Wilkes, Emory, Abert, Johnston, Simpson, Whiting and others. The map also contains three other insets, one of Cuba, one of the City and Harbor of Havana, and the last showing the Niagara Peninsula. 1853-54 was a time of considerable change in the country. This book and map are an incredible snapshot of the United States at that time. Includes an Appendix with several tables including (1) Table of Religions and Churches in the U. S.; (2) Productions of Agriculture in the U. S.; (3) Colleges and Professional Schools in the U. S.; (4) Theological Schools; (5) Medical Schools; (6) Table of Population; (7) Military Posts in the U. S.; (8) Railroads in the U. S.; (9) List of the Principal Canals in the U. S. Now in use; (10) Index to the Table of Railroads; and (11) Rates of Postage Within the U. S. Front hinge cracked but holding well; rear hinge with mild crack in part. One lower tip worn through with the top tips just starting to peek. Leather covers very good with tiny scuff on rear. Edges rubbed but not worn through. Small 3/4" crack at bottom of front joint. Five raised bands with gilt title excellent. Interior complete with occasional foxing and toning to extreme edges. Extremely colorful and scarce 24.5" x 29.25" folding map complete with no chips and only minor faults: two small tears at fold junctions and a few pea-size stains, plus foxing around the panel where the map is glued into book. Some minor toning to one fold. A lovely map on still-bright paper. 1364 pages; indexed. 6.5 x 9.
