Engraved map, hand-colored, with uncolored pictorial cartouche. Backed with linen and sectioned for folding. 120x145 cm (47¼x57") plus margins, with original marbled boards slipcase measuring 32.5x25 cm (12¾x9¾"), paper label with manuscript title.
Large and significant map of North and South American with the Pacific Ocean extending beyond the Sandwich Islands, and the Atlantic encompassing the Cape Verde Islands and points to the east. This is the first issue of the map, with the publisher's address at No. 24 Rathbone Place. The map was published one year after the Louisiana Purchase, on the eve of a decade of heightened activity in the American west. in the next ten years the map was to be largely filled in by Lewis & Clark, Pike, Long, and others. The map does include information provided by the various voyages to the Northwest Coast of America by Captain James Cook, as well as Vancouver, Mears, La Perouse and others, and the overland excursions of Alexander Mackenzie.
