Item Details
Description
1 medium silver filigree & gemstone OME 17th C. Smugglers button
These buttons are truly hard to find. They were made in the 17th century and designed to smuggle opium in a concealed compartment. The large Garnet cabochon on top actually is attached to a long threaded post that screws through to the bottom, when unscrewed it removes several of the enameled parts on top to reveal a hole in the cylindrical compartment where they would pour the opium into. I was informed a long time ago to not unscrew them because you could strip the screw and it would be impossible to rethread these posts as they are so fine. You can ess the screwed in post when looking at the base of the button, and you can turn the top, part way to see how it worked.
