Description
Egypt Third Intermediate Period, 1100-650 B.C..Faience. H. 4.2 cmA head of the Egyptian god Bes. Constructed from fired faience, some preserved blue is found on the beard and on the back of the head. The top of the head is a square-like shape with deeply pierced eyes. The conventional headdress of Bes is not preserved. Clear incisions define the facial features. The nose is flat and grooves trace the U-shaped cheeks. The beard consists of intricate vertical incisions. The mouth puckers, with a small tongue protruding. Two circular holes penetrate vertically and horizontally below the beard, indicating that this head was originally an attachment. As the Egyptian god of war and a patron of childbirth and the home, he was frequently depicted as attachments to reliefs, jewelery, amulets, and stele, typically in domestic contexts.Formerly Herbert A. Cahn, Basle, 1990s.
