Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan area, ca. 1350 to 1521 CE. A hand-built and highly-burnished pottery bowl with a wide basin, tall walls with a slight indentation, and a flared rim, all resting upon a trio of bulbous, hollow legs. The interior cavity of each red-slipped leg contains small terracotta balls which emit a rattling sound when jostled. The exterior of the cream-slipped body is adorned with vertical stripes of red pigment that trace up and over the rim. Size: 6.1" W x 3.3" H (15.5 cm x 8.4 cm).
Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000

Condition
Light abrasions to legs and body, fading to some areas of original pigmentation, with a few stable hairline fissures, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and manganese blooms throughout. Terracotta balls within legs make rattling sound when jostled.
