Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built redware pottery bowl featuring a deep, round-bottomed form with tall walls and an in-folded, thick rim. Deep red slip covers the entire interior and forms a base for the fineline black motifs along the exterior. These motifs depict repeated steps and pyramids with bold patches of creamy white pigment creating contrast against the dark red background. The vessel rests upon a trio of hollow conical legs with short slits on their sides which may once have rattled. Size: 11.25" W x 4.65" H (28.6 cm x 11.8 cm)
Provenance: private Pasadena, California, USA collection, acquired from local Los Angeles, California, USA estate, formed between 1970 and 2000

Condition
Repaired from a few large pieces, mainly on one side. The repairs are well done and unobtrusive, without overpaint. Nice deposits on surface. Light wear to pigment but most motifs are in excellent condition.
