Description
Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, Guatemala, Peten region, ca. 550 to 850 CE. Lovely and fascinating pottery tripod with bold decoration! Almost a cross between a plate and a bowl with concave surface painted in orange, red and black. Central decoration features a fantastic underworld fish-monster with open mouth, swirled eye and feathery fins. Outer rim once painted with black ray pattern, now mostly obscured; base reserved with rattle feet still functioning. A really nice example! Size: 11.125" W x 2.5" H (28.3 cm x 6.4 cm)
