Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Mayan Territories, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A striking pendant, hand-carved from emerald-green stone with light and dark inclusions, in the form of a frontal-facing head or maskette with a broad face and a huge, elaborate headdress that borders three sides. The central visage is defined by almond-shaped eyes beneath heavy brows, a slender nose with flared nostrils, puffy cheeks flanking full lips, and petite ears dwarfed by three large earspools each. The carved areas have been vigorously rubbed with vibrant red cinnabar, imbuing the piece with a regal bichrome appearance. Biconically drilled behind the top periphery for suspension, this is a stunning example of fine Mayan artistry! Lucite display stand for photography purposes only.
