Description
Pre-Columbian, Huari/Wari culture, Peru, ca. 6th to 9th century CE. A beautifully preserved, dark wooden tray with a large, shallow, rectangular depression for preparing hallucinogenic drugs to be used in rituals. At one end, the depression is open, while at the other two expertly carved jaguars perch, standing, their faces almost touching, forming a handle. Size: 2.7" W x 5.5" H (6.9 cm x 14 cm); 5.6" H (14.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

Condition
Stable crack at center and a few smaller stable cracks on the lower part of the body as a result of the natural aging process. Otherwise in remarkable condition for such an old piece of wood with excellent preserved form and detail.
