JIM STEINHARDT, Greenwich Village [Street Gallery], 1948, 10.5x10.5" Gelatin silver print, Printed c. 1948, Signed in pencil on mount recto under right of print. Inscribed in pencil under left of print: Greenwich Village - 1948 Signed in pencil on mount verso: / Jim Steinhardt 1947. Inscribed in ink: 20 [crossed out] / vintage.
As a New York photographer during the 40's & 50's, Jim Steinhardt's (1917-2010) work appeared in Life magazine (June 1949), the New York Times and photography quarterly Camera Work, amongst others. Exhibitions at this time included group shows at New York's Museum of Modern Art and Argent Gallery, as well as a three man show with Arnold Newman & Tosh Matsumoto at the NY Photo League. During the 1970's, Steinhardt was a professor of Photography at three Long Island Colleges: C. W. Post, Molloy, and Nassau Community, where he exhibited in both one man and faculty exhibitions. Prior to retiring, Steinhardt owned a gallery on Long Island.
Steinhardt's work is held among the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art NY, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Jewish Museum NY, Museum of the City of NY, Museum of Modern Art TX, Lower East Side Tenement Museum NY, Southeast Museum of Photography FL, University of Texas, Temple Sinai TX, San Francisco Fine Arts Museum and the National Gallery.
