Description
Armando Campero (Mexican 20th c) - The Head of John the Baptist. 48 x 36 inches. Oil on Canvas. Born in Mexico, Campero attended the San Carlos Academy of Art in Mexico City where one of his teachers was Diego Rivera. After receiving a one-year scholarship to study at the Fine Art School in Chicago, he then traveled to New York and Paris. He returned to Mexico and worked from 1949-1951 with Rivera on the mural project Lerma Tunnel. In the mid-1960s, Campero came to Los Angeles and was among the first artists to paint murals in East Los Angeles. He also did murals in Chicago, St. Louis, Spain, France, Mexico, and Guatemala. For almost 15 years he was a political cartoonist for La Opinion, Los Angeles's Spanish-language newspaper. Still a Mexican citizen, he lives in San Fernando Valley, making regular trips south of the border.
