**First Time At Auction**

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th to 20th Dynasty, ca. 1550 to 1070 BCE. A petite bead carved from light gray steatite depicting a pair of crocodiles encircling the topside that represent Sobek, the crocodile-headed god of creation who formed the waters of the Nile River. Each crocodile paces to its right towards the tail of the other and has incised scales across its back, squat but powerful legs, and long heads with muscular snouts. The bottom features a recessed face of Hathor, the goddess of women, fertility, and one of the primary deities of creation. Both Sobek and Hathor being creator deities signifies this bead as a symbol of fertility and virility. Size: 0.625" L x 0.5" W (1.6 cm x 1.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000

Condition
Minor softening to some finer details, with chalky white pigment across both the top and bottom, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to crocodile on top and facial details on bottom.
