ZIGLER FAMILY, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA PANTRY BOX, with applied period paper. 19th century. 5 1/4" H, 7 1/4" D.
Very good overall as-found condition.
Provenance: From the private collection of Margie and Gordon Barlow, Augusta Co., VA.
Purchased at the M. Otto Zigler estate auction, Jeffrey S. Evans (T/A GVA), 1988.
Catalogue Note: John Zigler (1786-1856) and wife Elizabeth Kline Zigler (1789-1870) moved from Lebanon Co., PA to northeastern Rockingham Co. around 1810.The Ziglers established a homestead on the banks of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River about six miles west of New Market, VA. They were among the earliest permanent settlers in this area which was then referred to as Williamsport, and later as Timberville. John Zigler established a thriving tannery, pottery, and hemp mill on his property, along with a sizable working farm. The property remained in the Zigler family until the death of Otto Zigler, the sole remaining direct descendent in 1988.
