ENGLISH BLUE SHELL-EDGE CERAMIC TABLE ARTICLES, LOT OF 11, comprising three oval platters and eight plates, including one featuring embossed floral and foliate motif. Marks include impressed eagle with "WARRANTED STAFFORDSHIRE / S. TAMS & CO. / SEMI CHINA", "ADAMS", "57", "HOPKIN & VERNON / BURSLEM", and "ROGERS / 18". Hopkin & Vernon, Central Pottery, Burslem; John & George Rogers, Dale Hall, Longport; William Adams IV & Sons, Tunstall, England. First half/third quarter 19th century. Plates 8 5/8" to 10 3/8" D.
Six undamaged, except each has minor to moderate usage wear including short scattered scratches; largest platter with flake to rim; smallest platter with hairline and chip to rim underside; one plate with chip and flakes to well, one with some minor flakes to rim, and one with chip to rim underside.
Provenance: From the Maury Lloyd Hanson, Jr. Revocable Trust for the Nature Conservancy, to be used solely for acquisition of land in the Piedmont and Shenandoah Valley areas of Virginia.
Catalogue Note: S. Tams & Company were ceramics merchants in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Brothers William and Sampson, originally from Staffordshire, England, began their successful crockery and china business in 1818. The Tams family eventually moved on to other prosperous pursuits in the mid-19th century including the founding of the Greenwood Pottery in Trenton, New Jersey in 1868.
